|  | | | Upcoming Contests | | Library Writers Competition - The 24th annual Writers Competition at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library has begun. Writers ages 6 to adult can submit up to two entries of fiction and nonfiction prose (no poetry) - two fiction pieces, two nonfiction or one in each category - up to 2,000 words. Entry forms and rules are available at the library beginning Jan. 31 or can be downloaded from the website, www.cdalibrary.org under 'About Us' and click on 'Annual Events.' To receive entry forms/rules by mail, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Writers Competition, Cd'A Public Library, 702 E. Front Ave. , Coeur d'Alene , ID 83814 . The deadline is March 31st, postmarked no later than March 30. Cash prizes are awarded in each category and age group at a ceremony in May: $100 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. Each year all entries in the competition are included in professionally bound volumes added to the library's collection. These volumes can be reviewed in the Nelson Memorial Room at the library. Entries are judged by professional writers, editors, and educators. Art Contest - Students submit a digital photo of any art (other than photography) and submit it online at www.celebratingart.com. Two contests each year - Next deadline is April 3rd. There are 10 winners in each grade division of K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 who will receive $25 and a full color book that includes their art. Other artists of merit will be invited to be published. There are no costs to enter or to be published. Open to all students in the US and Canada. Each year we have several homeschoolers who are among our national winners. Patriotic Essay Contest - The Knights of Columbus are holding their annual Patriotic Essay Contest for students in 6-8th grades. Essays can be submitted until April 15th. The theme of this year's contest is 'What did President Lincoln do for my family?' Entry forms need to be requested from Graham Crutchfield, 208-762-0773. Cash prizes: $200 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place and $50 for 3rd place. Please note, this contest is only open for students residing in Kootenai County. Poetry Contest - Students submit one poem 21 lines on any topic and submit it online at www.poeticpower.com or mail it to Creative Communication, 159 North Main Street , Smithfield , UT 84335 . Three contests each year with upcoming deadlines of April 12th and August 15th. There are 10 winners in each grade division of K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 who will receive $25 and a book that includes their poem. Other writers of merit will be invited to be published. Essay Contest - Students submit one non-fiction essay, 250 words or less on any topic and submit it online at www.poeticpower.com or mail it to Creative Communication, 159 North Main Street , Smithfield , UT 84335 . |  | | | Community Kitchen | | Here is a service opportunity for the whole family! One of the area churches sponsors a community kitchen every Sunday evening, offering meals to those in need. Two families are needed the 4th Sunday each month to assist with set-up (dishes, tables, chairs, etc), serving food, eating a meal with guests, and clean-up.
